Balancing the storage server access load

Founded in 2002, UK-based firm Loadbalancer has grown steadily without venture funding, now serving over 1,300 customers with 15,000 deployed systems to guarantee server service continuity. It has built partnerships with Cloudian, HPE, NetApp, Qumulo and Scality, with strong traction in medical diagnostic imaging. This article explores the key drivers behind its enduring success in the competitive storage market.

Load balancers distribute incoming system traffic to prevent server overloads and outages, safeguarding mission-critical infrastructure such as e-commerce and online transaction servers. They also redirect traffic to standby nodes to avoid failure risks, delivered via hardware appliances, virtual instances or cloud services.

Per Mordor Intelligence, the global load balancer market was valued at $7.1 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $13.8 billion by 2030. The moderately consolidated market comprises leading vendors, three major public cloud hyperscalers and niche players including Loadbalancer.

Key industry competitors include A10 Networks, Barracuda, Citrix, F5, HAProxy Technologies, Kemp, NGINX and Radware. HAProxy and NGINX are open-source solutions; F5 acquired NGINX in 2019.

Loadbalancer was founded by CEO Malcolm Turnbull and CFO Karen Turnbull, with Joshua Turnbull serving as Head of Strategy. Malcolm developed the initial solution during his tenure at e-commerce firm Crocus, frustrated by the high cost and complexity of Cisco’s LocalDirector, which posed single-point failure risks. Leveraging his open-source and Linux firewall expertise, he built a more reliable alternative with community support.

He integrated LVS, Ldirectord and HA-Linux technologies with a user-friendly web interface featuring one-click maintenance and graphical reporting. Version 5 added Layer 7 load balancing based on HAProxy. Today, the company offers 24/7 global support via teams across North and South America, Asia, Australia and Europe.

Products & Roadmap
The firm offers two core products with a third in beta: Load Balancer Enterprise ADC, vendor-agnostic Load Balancer ADC Portal, and beta-stage Load Balancer Endurance ADC featuring real-time updates, full automation, API access, modular design and enterprise resilience.

2026 priorities focus on post-Endurance bug fixes, followed by Enterprise ADC template and API optimization, plus enhanced portal automation for zero-downtime cluster upgrade and restoration. GPU server load balancing is not on the current roadmap.

Partners & Customers
Its client portfolio spans ASOS, Siemens Healthineers, Canon, Dell EMC, GE Healthcare and the UK NHS. Core use cases cover high-availability web services, medical records, diagnostic imaging, enterprise storage, legal document printing and other downtime-intolerant applications.

The NHS chooses Loadbalancer for superior cost efficiency and tailored healthcare capabilities. Its engineers are trained in PACS and DICOM routing, supporting niche cross-site medical data transmission features unavailable from most competitors.

Technical Capabilities
The platform supports Layer 7 round-robin traffic distribution with per-server connection limits, plus weighted connection balancing based on upload/download traffic types. Its proprietary weighted health check queries backend servers for 1–10 performance scores to intelligently allocate traffic.

Weighted round-robin serves as the default for storage scenarios. The system enables fine-grained traffic inspection and tiered routing: directing short-term backup tasks to high-speed flash storage and long-term archives to low-cost HDDs, maximizing storage value for clients. It natively supports tiering optimization for Scality and Cloudian object storage, delivering advanced features to help them compete with MinIO and Dell.

Its eight years of dedicated R&D for object storage vendors differentiates it from F5 and Kemp. Close partner collaboration drives continuous iteration, including customized feedback scripts developed with WEKA.

WEKA initiated the partnership after evaluating Loadbalancer’s Scality tiering capabilities. Loadbalancer now replaces WEKA’s limited open-source Envoy proxy, enabling intelligent cross-system tiering, traffic inspection and multi-site stretch clusters across three data centers.

To match WEKA’s high-throughput demands, the firm developed linear scaling architecture. Its large-scale deployments support up to 6TB combined throughput, with 48 load balancer nodes distributing traffic across three data centers with zero downtime.

Comment
For over two decades, Loadbalancer has maintained a focused product strategy without overextending into complex peripheral fields like security. Surging AI workloads will further boost market demand for its solutions. Its customer-centric iteration and close partner collaboration position the firm for sustained long-term growth.
